SIGNAL & COMMAND DOG TRAINING

OVERVIEW

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Some advanced Military Working Dog Programs train K9s using a Clear Signal technique. In a nutshell, the concept is that every voice command should have a clear and recognizable visual signal that goes along with it. This technique maximizes a dog’s training and function while also empowering the handler to use both verbal and nonverbal commands. There is one command and one signal for one action with consistency from day one. We have found this to be extraordinarily helpful so that your dog acts, obeys and responds to your commands without you having to say a single word.

SIT

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding=”||10px|||”]

SIT is the starting point of all mainstream training programs. This is your first step into training, where trainer and dog learn to be on the same page with signal and command training.

DOWN

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

The natural progression from SIT is DOWN. This command builds on your success with SIT and adds one additional motion to complete DOWN. It is one of the basic foundations for other training actions.

STAY

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Now that your dog can SIT and DOWN, we need them to strike a pose. The STAY command is fundamental to basic and advanced obedience and used in the majority of future lessons.

COME

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Your dog is making progress, it can SIT and STAY, and DOWN and STAY. It now needs to COME on your command. These four base commands are the pillars of signal and command based actions.

NO

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Your dogs (and kids) may think NO is your favorite word. Little do they know that NO serves as an important command to ensure the safety, discipline and good behavior of all your loved ones.

FREE

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Rewards are the keystone of any dog training program. Rewards come in the form of treats, toys, play and affection. The FREE command verbally excites your dog and informs them that they have done something right and earned an exciting reward. FREE is one of two primary release commands.

UP

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

To this point, we have been teaching your dog lateral motion commands. Now it is time to add elevation with the UP command. This will be your first lesson with a training platform.

OFF

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Not to be confused with DOWN, the OFF command becomes important when your dog begins to get up on unwanted objects. When this happens, you want to train you dog to get OFF and stay OFF. OFF also plays a role in agility-based actions.

BED

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Dogs do not need a king sized bed or nice leather couch. It is important to train your dog so they know they have their own bed. The BED command tells they should use their bed for rest, naps and as a dedicated safe space.

HOUSE

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

In the wild, dogs are a part of the food chain. Their instincts push them to find safety and shelter from predators while sleeping. Crate training is a good way to provide shelter, warmth and protection while also giving dogs a secure place to call home. Proper training is necessary to ensure a positive crate training experience.
